TOM BAUER

How did my music evolve? The foundation of the Amalfi Sound Orchestra in the early 2000s was an important waypoint to the implementation of my ideas. I discovered through the Amalfi Sound Orchestra the immense variety of the raised light music of the 20s and 30s. Everything from foxtrot to tango, from slow waltz to slow fox, and even related music genres like salon music, Viennese waltz from Johann Strauß and others, and even operetta and ballet were combined to a colourful musical bouquet.

My previous musical path lead me through diverse studio works to the co-foundation of the Tim Isfort Orchestra (Roger Willemsen, Blixa Bargeld, Christian Brückner, Katharina Thalbach, Stoppok), of which I became the concert master, and to the Domke Schweiger Band (Siggi Domke). At the same time I dipped my toes in the world of show business as a violinist for the band “Die Schlagers”. Alas, after a lot of sleepless nights, tours and gigs (PRO 7, Arabella Kiesbauer), the time had come for me to continue my musical journey.

I had already wished to play cross-genre even before my music studies. I enjoyed “both” sides of music in my youth, as a “classic” violinist in a chamber orchestra, as well as as a violin- and guitar-playing singer-songwriter with german texts and my own combo. It was already clear to me that I wanted to make music my living, which lead me to studying music with violin as my main instrument.

Even at that time, I noticed that the classical etudes, sonatas and concertos, taking part in string quartets and orchestras didn’t fulfil my craving for my own kind of music off the beaten tracks. It became ever more important to me to self-improve and do my own thing.

Why shouldn’t a violinist and a drummer be able to play together, without sheet music, just for the sake of it? And maybe complement them with an electric bass? I wanted to try it all! I luckily met a lot of musicians from different horizons that were interested in the prospect of trying out new things, in this case to play with a violinist. These were very productive and prolific times, and I still carry a lot of emotions, influences and impressions from those times with me today. There weren’t any musical reserves or fears then, and there luckily aren’t today either.

This is the chance for me to experience my musical melting pot: throwing together everything musical and good and seeing what comes out, regardless of what others might say!
